I’d hate to ask two in the course of one evening, but what if (and this is a stretch) the Telecommunications Act of 1996 had never passed?

The Telecommunications Act of 1996 pretty much made broadcast television a non-factor when it comes to entertainment and allowed Big Media to become bigger and less-inclusive.  It allowed large channel groups to exist, let alone allowed them to own more than one television and radio channels in a market. It also made cable more of a powerhouse than it had ever been, a position that is only now slowly eroding thanks to digital entities that came about thanks to the advent of more affordable broadband cable.

Its passage also led to the revision of the Children’s Television Act, which forced broadcast networks to air three hours of educational programming a week between the hours of 7 AM and 10 PM with programs running at minimum 30 minutes per show (keep in mind this rule only affected broadcast television and not cable networks which, as I said earlier, got stronger thanks the the Telecommunications Act).

If it never passed, there would be more locally-owned television and radio stations than they are now and fewer duopolies (no more sister stations in the same markets). There would be more locally-owned independent channels as well.

There would be more telephone companies, and they wouldn’t offer products like FiOS. There would also be more cable operators, but they wouldn’t offer telephone services.

Companies like Comcast wouldn’t have grown to the size that they are, let alone attempt to buy entertainment companies like they almost did with The Walt Disney Company and what they actually accomplished with NBC Universal.  I doubt there would be an NBC Universal or even a Vivendi Universal as media ownership wouldn’t be as loose as they are today. AOL wouldn’t even think of buying Time Warner, which owned Time Warner Cable at the time.

In short, the media landscape wouldn’t be so concentrated as it is now as there would be more media outlets owned by more smaller than companies.  It’d be more competitive, which isn’t such a bad thing, except for those folks who want to own everything.

Would you please allow a few story writers in as contributors to the site?

It’s like I said in the previous post. I don’t think it’s fair to have contributors on the site without compensating them in some way. I know people take a lot of time to write articles and stories and to have it on a site without getting anything for it seems like you’re being cheated for your hard work.

Trust me, if I had the scratch, I’d do it, but right now, I don’t want to cheat anybody out of anything at all. That’s not how I roll.

Well, I’m glad I’m not anonymous, nor am I in any way associated with those jerk-offs. Anyway….what kind of con would you be really interested in going to, ifnyou could?

San Diego Comic-Con or New York Comic-Con would be the ultimate conventions I’d like to go to for sure, mostly because it has nearly everything I dig in pop culture: comics, animation, toys, pure awesomeness. 

Then again, I’d like to go to one of those big-market anime conventions too. Something like Anime Expo, Otakon, or Anime Weekend Atlanta. I’m heading to Ohayocon in a few weeks, so I’m looking to enjoy the con experience for the very first time. 

Should be fun.
